On November 30, 2022, Athena was abducted from her family's driveway by Tanner Lynn Horner, a FedEx Ground delivery driver who had just delivered a package containing a Christmas gift to her home. Horner strangled Athena inside his delivery truck and disposed of her body in a waterway near Boyd, Texas. Her death prompted civil wrongful death lawsuits filed by her parents against FedEx Ground and Big Topspin, Inc., as well as the legislative creation of 'Athena's Alert' in Texas to accelerate regional missing child notifications.
